Volley Master

Volley Master is a training app developed for volleyball players who want to improve both physically and technically. The app includes structured strength workouts tailored to the sport, technique tutorials with videos and written guidance, and a built-in calendar to help users plan and stay consistent. A reward system with XP and achievements adds motivation and encourages progress over time.

The idea came from my own challenges as a volleyball player trying to find reliable and sport-specific training resources. By developing a minimum viable product (MVP), I focused on the most essential features and user needs. The result is an accessible and motivating tool for players who want to train smarter and reach their goals.

Users can browse structured training programs tailored to volleyball performances, with different levels. Each program includes an overview of the sessions, and with one tap, users can seamlessly add it to their calendar for easy planning and consistency.

After completing a workout, users earn XP and unlock achievements, progressing towards new levels. They can also share their progress with others, boosting motivation and engagement through community support.

Competitor analysis

In the early research phase, I explored apps that included similar features to those I planned to implement in my own app. This included general fitness apps, sport-specific apps and apps with innovative concepts.

Common strengths

  • Clear structure and guided workout plans

  • High-quality video content and visual demonstrations

  • Simple and user-friendly interfaces

  • Motivating elements like challenges or progress tracking

  • Strong brand identity and consistent design

Conclusion

The analysis revealed a gap in the market for an app that combines sport-specific strength training, technical skill development, and gamified motivation – all tailored for volleyball players. These insights directly influenced the feature set and design decisions I made in Volley Master.

Common weaknesses

  • Few or no volleyball-specific features

  • Lack of combined strength and skill training in one app

  • Limited customization and personalization options

  • Some had outdated design or confusing navigation

  • Key features often hidden behind paywalls

Sitemap

The sitemap was initially structured based on insights from early competitor research, as well as the features I wanted to include in the app. As the project progressed, the sitemap evolved through iteration and user feedback to better support the core user journey and ensure a more complete and intuitive app experience.

User testing

User testing was done on both wireframes and the visual prototype. Early testing helped improve navigation and structure, while later tests gave feedback on visual clarity and feature usability.

Key insights

  • Users navigated easily, but wanted explanatory text by icons in the nav-bar to make navigation more intuitive.

  • The structured display of exercises in training sessions was very well received - users liked seeing the entire session in advance.

  • The function for adding training programs to the calendar was seen as motivating and clear.

  • Users wanted larger interaction boxes when logging repetitions and weight.

  • The blue color strengthened the sporty feel and made clickable elements clear.
